  1. Background of the Study

In the ancient time and the Middle Ages, formal education was in the monopoly of the higher-social class and accessible to the noblemen. But, after the enlightenment age formal education has been greatly developed. Education became popular and some governments in their educational program and performance pay more attention on human’s right and low-social class of society and hope this class to be covered by education, and also want to prove the motto of “education for all”.

If we compare ourselves with any person in our society we may find someone of the same age, weight, height, nationality, income, and even lifestyle as we are. However, we do not live in identical environments. Our diversity is determined by natural factors, such as individual, professional, educational, cultural circumstance, and social-class.1

The families, schools, and neighborhoods of children have social class characteristics. Some children have parents who have a great deal of money, high education, and who work in prestigious occupations, such as manager of the factories, lecturers, professors, and so forth. These children live in attractive houses and neighborhoods. Other children have parents who do not have very much money and who work in less prestigious occupations, such as public transport driver, farmworker, housemaid, and so forth. These children do not live in very attractive houses and neighborhoods.

Social-class is the citizen or society discrimination into hierarchy classes. And the realization of it; there are higher and lower-classes. The basic and the core of this social-stratum in society are caused by human rights and obligations distribution imbalance, and responsibility on the social values. In the beginning, social-stratums in society are based on the sex discrimination, discrimination between race and ethnic, differentiation between leader and division of labor and as it. In a little and simple society only found few of social class, but in a complex and advance society there are a lot of social class.2 Human life usually full of with the difference status. There are many things are praised by human in their society, such as wealth or money, power or function, science, religiousness piety, and may be descendant from respected family.3

Social classes related with the possibilities to get a better life. And the people position in a social class determines the possibility of his or her prosperity life, higher education possibility that can be enjoyed by his or her child, the possibility of old-age security, and so forth.

An individual is a unitary that has individuality each. There are many differences from one student to student, such as intelligence, body or physical, emotional, aptitude, achievement, and even their social class. There are some students who have high-competence and low-competence. And these differences are positively correlated with their social class.

Family is the first social institution that is known by child, and it’s also one of three education centers (tripusat pendidikan) that has responsibility for prepares the donation and facilities for child education need. Families (parents) who live in high-social class have not more difficulty to fulfill the child school equipment. This condition is difference with the families who live in low-social class, they will so happy to see their children be able to study, much less to have the equipment and school facility. And there are many students drop-out of school because they have to work hard to support their parents looking for the basic necessities of life.

Since childhood children are cared for and grow up by and in family. Everything existing in family, including peoples, regulations, customs and traditions are very influential and determine child development style. How does the education system in family, in such away the children style to react their circles.

Intelligence and creativity student development although somewhat influenced by genetic factors, are also the product of environmental conditions. For examples, students are more apt to have intelligently when they have physical and social support systems to help them on their efforts, in other words, when intelligence is distributed. They are more apt to think creatively when they are encouraged to take risk and focus their attention on internal rather than external reward. And both intelligence and creativity are bolstered by a rich body of knowledge, skills, and experiences on which to draw.

The family lives of parents and children vary from social class to social class. Families vary in how many parents are present, in how many, in the ways women and men interact, in their attitudes to word childrearing, and in many other ways. Families still differ by social class in how their raise their children. In general, high class parents often act in ways that encourage autonomy and independence, whereas low social class parents more often encourage conformity and obedience to (and distrust of) authority.

The economy problem, honor, job, politic, and education factors which carried by parent are may become source of strength for child’s study. For the example: least of financial will intrude on smoothness education. It’s not rarely if there are a lot of students’ education left in an unfinished state caused of financial, and then their study be forced to stop. The students from low-social class have to look for the job, because of their parents lack of ability to finance their schooling.4 But, beside of it; there are many students work hardly to get high education and higher-grades.

The democracy in education is the term used to solve the problem of discrimination in education,5 and to prove the motto of “education for all.” This term is based on Constitution 1945: 31: 1 (UUD 1945 pasal 31 ayat 1),6 and the verse of Al-Qur’an.

Mankind was but one nation, but differed (later). Had it not been for a word that went forth before from thy Lord, their differences would have been settled between them.” QS. Yunus: 19

According to the student diversity of social class background, the researcher interests to make a research on the topic of “A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF STUDENT’S ACHIEVEMENT IN HIGH AND LOW-SOCIAL CLASS AT MAN MALANG I TLOGOMAS-MALANG.”

  1. How is students’ academic achievements in high and low social class?
  2. How is students’ nonacademic achievements in high and low social class?
  3. Is there any difference between students’ academic and nonacademic achivements in high and low social class?
  4. What is the proponent and inhibiting factor of students’ academic and non-academic achievements?
  1. Objective of the Study
  1. To describe student’s academic achievement in high an low social class.
  2. To describe student’s nonacademic achivement in high and low social class.
  3. To describe the difference between academic and nonacademic student’s achivement in high and low social class.
  4. To explain the proponent and inhibiting factor of student’s academic and non-academic achievement.
  1. Significance of the Study

Hope fully the findings of this study can provide useful information and beneficial for: education institution (the findings of this study supposed can be useful as the thinking contribution and suggestion in order to repair education quality, and also be of benefit to school management in handling towards poor grades student; either from high and low-social class), science development (the findings of this study supposed can be useful as the description of the reality of student’s social life, and then, it can abolish the term of “discrimination in education”), and researcher (this study useful to expand the insight about reality of student’s and the influence of social class on student’s education; especially on students’ achievement).

  1. Hypothesis of the Research

Statistical hypothesis testing used to decide between two (or more) different possibilities in order to resolve an issue in ambiguous situation. There are two kinds of hypothesis in this research: Ha ( µ1 ˃ µ2) and Ho 1 = µ2).

Ha = Student’s achievement are different in different social classes.

Ho = Student’s achievement are not different in different social classes.
